This is the ultimate body wash when it comes to battling sensitive or dry skin. It comes from us because we made it with one purpose in mind.

To help people with sensitive skin enjoy a shower or bath without irritation.

I do admit we are biased, but that’s because we have one of the highest rated reviews, and the quality of our ingredients is absurdly high. Rather than water, we use Aloe Vera Juice to soothe and cool.

It’s scented with lemon and rosemary essential oils.

Instead of putting 0.001% of a quality ingredient and making ridiculous claims for the sake of marketing, we stuff it with natural juice, germ fighting acids and jolly (expensive) goodness like Manuka oil.

No triclosan, sulfates (SLS, SLES, SCS, ALS, ALES), formaldehyde, salicylates, parabens, phosphates, MEA, DEA, TEA, BHT, PEGs, petroleum-based ingredients, animal by-products, perfumes, dyes or caustics.

Best Body Gel for Soothing: Cetaphil Pro Soothing Wash

Cetaphil PRO soothing wash for dry skin

What we like:

✔️ One of the best picks for eczema
✔️ Clinically proven formula to cleanse
✔️ Recommended by the National Eczema Association
✔️ Lathers well

What we didn’t like:

❌ Expensive option with small volume
❌ Pushed by many dermatologists without considering other options

Out of all the other brands, Cetaphil Pro comes out on top if you are experiencing eczema. It’s accepted by the National Eczema Association and is consistently rated as a top performer to soothe very dry and sensitive skin.

There is no fragrance, which is a plus. Artificial fragrances cause more harm than good if you have eczema. Keep in mind that this is not a natural or organic product.

If you have severe eczema, please consult your doctor or dermatologist first as I know that even a tiny amount of a certain ingredient could trigger your skin condition. This version is not considered as an over the counter body wash because there are no active ingredients.

Best Body Wash for Oily Skin: Neutrogena Body Clear

Neutrogena body clear treats and helps prevent breakouts

What we like:

✔️ Great for oily skin
✔️ Contains Salicylic Acid
✔️ You know what to expect with Neutrogena

What we didn’t like:

❌ Very expensive when you compare with the volume
❌ Don’t use if you don’t have oily skin as the product can be considered too harsh for very sensitive skin

Neutrogena is obviously a big brand.

This body wash contains Salicylic Acid which is a proven acne fighting ingredient. It’s used in many acne products as it helps to prevent breakouts on your back, chest, shoulders and body in general.

While it claims not to over-dry and irritate, using too much can cause sensitivity. The good thing about Salicylic Acid is that it helps to remove oils from your skin. It’s used throughout beauty products too.

If you have oil skin, this is one of the best options we’ve found this year. However, if you have combination or don’t have oily skin, use our editors’ choice or something less harsh on your skin.

Best Body Wash for Normal Skin: Le Petit Marseillais Extra Gentle Shower Cream Orange Blossom

Le Petit Marseillais orange blossom

What we like:

✔️ No parabens, phthalates and sulfates.
✔️ Trusted brand in France
✔️ Great for normal to dry skin
✔️ Creamy and soothing

What we didn’t like:

❌ Not all natural
❌ Not the best choice for people with highly sensitive skin

A shower cream from France with the scent of orange blossoms. It has a gentle foamy cleansing effect and it’s pH balanced.

Although this is not a natural or organic product, this is great for people with normal to dry skin. However, there are some ingredients that cause concern for sensitive skin.

If you have mildly sensitive skin, the body soap should leave your skin hydrated, nourished & soft.

It has a creamy texture but doesn’t have a thick consistency. The moisturizer or lotion-like creaminess is soothing. Not watery, but the body wash feels light and refreshing.

Best Sensitive Body Wash for Combination Skin: Cetaphil gentle skin cleanser

Cetaphil gentle skin cleanser

What we like:

✔️ Safe for body and face
✔️ Non-drying
✔️ pH balance

What we didn’t like:

❌ Not all-natural
❌ Weak lather

This is the second Cetaphil product in the recommended list already. This is a gentle skin cleanser that can be used on the body as well as the face. The product has been around for a long time so that itself is a testament to the staying power and efficacy of their formulation.

The price is also much better than the Pro version.

This is one of those products that does one thing and does it extremely well.

It’s great for combination skin type because it’s not drying. It doesn’t over-moisturize either which can leave your skin feeling greasy, oily and sticky.

This Cetaphil body wash works by cleaning without stripping away your skin’s natural protective shield. Yes, this is pH balanced.

It’s also unscented and gentle, without artificial coloring.

The good thing about big brands is they can afford to perform clinical studies to back up their claims. That’s a pro tip as a manufacturer.

Be careful of marketing buzzwords and especially non-proven claims from most products on Amazon. There are certain claims that are illegal unless it is certified or there are clinical reports.

This is the fan-favorite version of our soap line. Our longest running version.

What makes this the best body wash for dry skin?

Just like our Lemon Rosemary body wash, this pH balance wash uses the same base. It’s made from the highest-grade natural ingredients that The Crown Choice is known for.

No chemicals, no fake color or fragrance and not tested on helpless animals. The pH balance body soap formulation will not strip your skin when cleaning. The sweet peppermint smell is refreshing and all-natural.

Our liquid soap is not germicidal and does not contain harsh alcohol or triclosan.

This makes it the best body wash for dry sensitive skin with a great 5.5 pH. You can use this as little as you want or as much as you want. It can also be used as a shampoo or facial wash.

As a shampoo, it doesn’t work as good because it doesn’t contain strong synthetic moisturizers. This can make your hair feel dry and rough after you dry.

For the face, it’s a great alternative to buying a different product just for your face. Most products are named differently to make more money, when you can use the same product as an all-in-one.

The Budget Moisturizing Body Wash: Nivea Care and Sparkle

Nivea care and sparkle

What we like:

✔️ Sensitive skin formula
✔️ Unique hydrating technology
✔️ Mild scent

What we didn’t like:

❌ SLS ingredient
❌ Artificial fragrance
❌ Not truly for sensitive skin

Nivea has some great products at low price points.

Nivea has been around for a very long time. I remember watching a commercial for this in the late 70’s. It was a big brand then, it’s an even bigger and trusted brand now.

They have a formulation called  “Developed with NIVEA’s breakthrough Hydra IQ Technology” which is a hydrating formula for people with sensitive skin.

Nivea Care and Sparkle is marketed for people with sensitive skin. It has one of the highest ratings on Amazon with 73% 5-star reviews.

The downside is that their number 2 ingredient is SLS and includes synthetic fragrance. We can’t say it’s the best, but for the price point, it is a great alternative to the expensive versions at the top.

Budget Friendly Itchy and Dry Skin: Aveeno Skin Relief Gentle Body Wash

Aveeno skin relief

What we like:

✔️ Budget friendly option
✔️ Good size for the price
✔️ Tested to work for mild sensitive skin

What we didn’t like:

❌ Coconut is a synthetic scent
❌ Contains synthetics like SLS and fragrance
❌ Not a true sensitive skin formulation

Aveeno with the help of oatmeal extracts is a nice combination to help soothe itchy and dry skin.

For the price point, it’s another great alternative. It isn’t as clean as the best ones from earlier but you can’t expect the best for cheap.

There’s a good tradeoff where it’s been tested to work for the majority of mildly sensitive people. If you have super sensitivity or eczema, stay away from anything below $10 as it’s not possible to make quality products with cheap ingredients.

If you want something truly made for sensitive people, consider the fragrance free body wash below.

Best Unscented Body Wash: The Crown Choice unscented bath and body wash

Extra sensitive skin needs to be addressed properly. It’s different and unique in every person and it needs special treatment.

If you think you deserve this kind of luxury at an affordable price, then our unscented body wash is the best body wash for sensitive skin types like yours because it’s non-drying, hypoallergenic & pH balanced.

If you have highly sensitive skin, avoid the big nasty chemical preservatives and the acidic sudding agents of soaps. Also avoid fake scents and coloring which you’ll find irritating.

Natural, vegan and fragrance-free means you don’t have to worry about terrible allergic reactions, redness or irritation.

Best Natural Body Wash (The Contender): The Seaweed Bath Co. Body Wash

seaweed-hydrating-and-cleansing-body-wash

What we like:

✔️ No harmful chemicals
✔️ Made from natural ingredients
✔️ No coloring
✔️ Vegan

What we didn’t like:

❌ No lather
❌ Weird consistency with watery feel
❌ Can’t be used for bathing

The Seaweed Bath Co. is SLS and parabens free. More than that they also use ingredients from seaweed which has amazing properties. Seaweed has been huge in Asia for centuries with so many anti-oxidants.

We first met these guys at natural shows and expo’s and they have a great product line.

It’s gentle and mild enough that they also market this as a shaving gel as it is fairly light and thin. Hawaiian kukui oil, coconut oil, and aloe vera help nourish and moisturize the skin.

It contains spirulina which is mainly made from chlorophyll and is used for cleansing and its anti-aging properties. Spirulina is a gentle cleanser it’s even used as a drink for people who like to cleanse their gut.

This is not tested on animals, no fragrance artificial or natural, no coloring & it lathers.

This Seaweed brand is a strong contender for the title of the best body cleanser for sensitive skin.

Best Gentle Product for General Purpose Use: Puracy Natural Body Wash

Puracy natural body wash - citrus & sea salt

What we like:

✔️ Verified safe
✔️ pH balance soap
✔️ Natural scent
✔️ Sea salt deep cleanse
✔️ Vegan

What we didn’t like:

❌ Scent is weak
❌ Weak lather

Plant-based. Award-winning.

Verified by independent Phd. chemists, this chemical-free and doctor created brand will help clean your skin while hydrating it and keeping it soft and smooth.

Based out of Austin, Texas, Puracy makes some fantastic products. The natural scents derived from citrus and sea salt are plant-based and formulated to be gentle and non-irritating.

They don’t lean on this much but this body wash for sensitive skin is pH balanced with the same acidity of your skin.

It can be used by bigger kids and pets. Great for after-pool showers to get rid of chlorine and other pool crud.

You can also find Puracy in Target stores.

Best Body Wash for Men with Sensitive Skin: Soapberry for Body

soapberry for body

What we like:

✔️ No alcohol content
✔️ For hair, face and body
✔️ All natural
✔️ Super quality

What we didn’t like:

❌ Expensive
❌ Not a manly scent

Men usually want things cheap and want it manly.

This may not check both boxes, but if you have sensitive skin, even as a man it’s annoying and frustrating.

It’s not a pink bottle your woman may mistake as some other woman’s.

The ingredient is made of soapberry which is a natural ingredient from Taiwan that naturally produced suds.

Whether you are out in the open heat grinding out a day’s work, or in the office championing the next award winning software or marketing strategy, you need this to break through all that tense sweat and dirt.

You could continue to get cheap stuff, but once you try it, you won’t go back.

Best Liquid Face and Body Cleanser: Sebamed Liquid Face and Body Wash

Sebamed liquid face and body wash

What we like:

✔️ pH 5.5 balance soap
✔️ Hydrating formula
✔️ Powerful cleansing

What we didn’t like:

❌ Most expensive
❌ Misleading label and claims
❌ Contains SLS and strong fake fragrance

Sebamed is a well-known German-made product that you can buy in malls or drugstores. But it’s also very expensive.

Its pH-balanced formula is great to maintain your skin’s natural barrier. It has mild hydrating and cleansing properties that can remove dirt from clogged pores and it’s hypoallergenic.

The biggest problem is that it contains fragrance and SLS. Both bad for sensitive skin. For mild cases it will be fine. But for truly sensitive skin, skip this and use something else that is all natural.

The other problem with these types of cleansers is the claim of being “soap free”. Technically, there is no such thing. Every body wash is some form of soap. What they mean is they don’t use typical ingredients used to make everyday soap, but their ingredients fall into the “soap” and “body wash” category.

Why You Should Listen to Us

At The Crown Choice, we know how it feels to have sensitive, dry and damaged skin.

You look online and find the best body wash for sensitive skin. You click on it, excited at the prospect that you finally found the best care for your sensitive skin.

  • It’s rated 5 stars
  • Has thousands of reviews
  • Giant brand

But when you test it on the back of your hand, you start to feel an itch, see redness and irritation.

Many liquid soap body washes claim things like hypoallergenic, natural, eczema suited, dermatologist approved and so on. But the problem why you still get irritations is because the grade and quality of the ingredients are cheap.

Think of it like this.

If you only had $10 to buy ingredients for a family dinner of 4, what would you buy?

Now, if you had $100 to buy for this dinner, what would you buy?

Did you visualize the difference? That’s the way it works with products too.

Many big brands claim to produce soaps that are gentle or natural, but it’s not 100% natural. The FDA does not regulate the term “natural”. You can slap the word “natural” on anything and get away with it. Many natural products contain less than 10% natural ingredients, but claim to be natural.

Shhhhh.

Don’t let people know we are revealing industry secrets.

That’s because this is a nightmare scenario for people when they find out that a product that’s supposed to help them is doing more harm.

Using plant-based natural body wash and shampoo for sensitive skin will help you avoid this scenario. The chemical industry still pushes for SLS because it’s cheap to make in bulk.

At The Crown Choice we created the best body wash for dry, sensitive skin specifically because we have friends and family who suffer from severe eczema and skin issues.

It’s hard to watch people you care for scratch til they bleed, not be able to sleep, have so much skin falling off that it frightens strangers who don’t understand.

Why Most Body Washes Hurt People with Sensitive Skin

Easy.

Most body washes use harsh, synthetic cleaning agent chemicals.

This is what we all know and mostly ignore because it’s not immediately harmful.

From a business perspective, it can be mass produced, it’s cheap, it’s profitable. If we wanted to make cheap body washes that you can find everywhere, we could – but we won’t and we don’t.

The ingredients alone of our body wash products costs more than the actual price of the product you pay at the store.

It’s not just all the harsh chemicals that can harm sensitive skin. Even soaps with natural organic ingredients can hurt sensitive skin if it is not pH balanced.

Sure, liquid soaps that aren’t pH balanced can clean and moisturize, but they strip away helpful lipids that naturally help protect your skin. Stripping away the lipids will hurt sensitive skin even more.

These lipids are like shields.

If you are a Star Trek fan (boo Star Wars) and the Starship Enterprise loses her shield, she’s susceptible to hostile boarding, phaser & photon torpedo attacks.

A nerdy way of saying that if your skin is stripped of protection, then it’s prone to dryness, itching & irritation.

Top 3 Ingredients to Avoid Like the Plague for Sensitive Skin

Ingredient 1: Formaldehyde

This is one of our biggest peeves from companies that include this in their product. There’s no reason to.

The true identity of formaldehyde is a colorless, smelly chemical used in household cleaning products, fertilizers/pesticides and some construction materials.

If big brands really cared about your health and well being, why would they even consider putting this into products?

The worst thing is that formaldehype is also found in some foods. But that’s a different topic altogether.

Formaldehyde is commonly found in soapy cleaning products as a preservative for things like dishwashing soap or fabric conditioner. It’s included in personal care products like bath soaps, make-up and even some medicines to keep the cost to manufacture down instead of using a better and safer (but more expensive) preservative.

Extended exposure to this chemical does major damage to humans and their pets. Here’s what the EPA has to say about formaldehyde.

Formaldehyde can cause irritation of the skin, eyes, nose, and throat. High levels of exposure may cause some types of cancers.

EPA

Ingredient 2: Parabens

Paraben is another preservative type chemical used in beauty products. Industry insiders and chemists don’t see a problem with it from their point of view and education.

The argument is that it’s such a small percentage, it doesn’t matter.

Our counter to that is, if you knew there was hair in your food, would you still eat it or not.

Parabens are used everywhere.

It’s included in toothpaste and deodorant as a way to inhibit bacterial or fungal growth.

It’s not an ingredient you want to use in food, or a mild sensitive body wash-like product.

But it is.

Lab tests show that high levels of parabens exposure disrupt endocrine chemical production which can cause breast cancer. And the kicker here is that we’re already exposed to parabens in everyday life.

This thing is in almost all synthesized/processed food, cosmetics & cleaning products.

We have here another chemical that’s not immediately harmful but it’s the cumulative effect that’s dangerous.

Ingredient 3: Sulfates (SLS or SLES)

You know that luxurious lather you see and feel when using soap or detergent?

SLS or SLES (sodium laureth sulfate) causes this bubble and sudding reaction. It won’t kill you, but it’s horrible for sensitive or very dry skin.

Sulfates can be derived from coconut and palm oil, but why do big brands continue to use SLS derived from petroleum?

Again, it all comes down to:

  • cheaper
  • more profit
  • mass producible

Avoid SLS because long term exposure will irritate eyes, skin and lungs. There are also sulfates with a substance called 1,4-dioxane that is known to cause cancer in lab animals.

Dry Skin? 3 Ingredients You Must Avoid

Ingredient 1: Triclosan

Triclosan is the active ingredient in many antibacterial soaps and hand sanitizers but this one is a little tricky because it does have benefits like getting rid of germs (can’t say it kills germs without clinical proof) and preventing body odor.

But Triclosan will dry out your skin even if you don’t have allergies or dry/sensitive skin.

Triclosan is antibacterial and there are a few independent medical studies showing that germs are getting stronger. These superbugs are can’t be killed except by the strongest antibiotics.

Guess what?

Triclosan is one of the causes of this phenomenon. Because it kills the weaker germs but the germs that survive it becomes immune to it.

Something to keep in mind along with making your skin drier.

Ingredient 2: Artificial fragrance

Here’s another industry secret that companies never want you to know about the fragrance industry.

As we sell natural air fresheners, we know the ins and outs about fragrance. The FDA has allowed fragrance companies to hide all ingredients if they claim it is a fragrance.

This means a company could put the most toxic chemical mixed in with their fragrance and claim that it is proprietary. The company is not obligated to disclose how they made the fragrance.

See how crazy that is? Imagine if a food company was allowed to put all sorts of junk into their food and then hide the ingredients because it was proprietary.

Most fake scents are synthesized from crude oil and will leave your skin feeling like the sands of Sahara.

Sure it smells great, but most sensitive people get reactions from the gases, chemicals and other stuff that comes from it.

Also, artificial fragrances destroys the pH balance of your skin, creating an imbalance in your skin’s ecology. This weakens your skin and will cause it to dry out and become irritated easily.

We’ve always recommended natural fragrances with natural preservatives especially if you don’t like the unscented variety.

That’s why we don’t use anything other than natural essential oils which are beneficial to your skin. No artificial fragrances.

Ingredient 3: Artificial color

Artificial colors and dyes are in foods and beverages to make it look enticing. Also used a lot in beauty and health products.

It’s the same problem again where artificial colors comes from petroleum or coal tar sources. And yes this is bad. Your skin isn’t just external.

What you eat and put into your body plays a big role.

Research shows that artificial coloring called D&C Red 27 or FD&C blue irritates the skin and is linked to ADHD in kids.

In fact, the EU already banned this substance.

Why doesn’t the FDA?

Now the problem is disclosure and even the Huffpost states that the

“…FDA does a subpar job in regulating what goes into our food supply, you’ll be equally appalled, if not more, on its regulation of cosmetic and personal-care products.”

If you want to avoid artificial fragrance, best option is to use unscented or natural products.

Look for These Qualities in Sensitive Skin Body Wash

Here’s a list of what you should look for if you want to find body wash that is good for sensitive skin or other skin conditions.

You want to find a body wash that is a gentle and effective cleanser.

  • Gentle products are pH balanced. It won’t strip away the protective layer of even the most sensitive skin.
  • Effective washes are made with high grade ingredients. It can clean using ingredients derived from nature.
  • No artificial fragrances and SLS. There are a few that contain fragrance and SLS in the list above, but they have their purposes. We prefer the natural alternatives though.

Follow these basic steps when looking for the best body wash for sensitive skin and you’ll find yourself with moisturized, soft and calm skin again.
