Over the years, I’ve spent more money than I’d care to admit on fancy body wash products. I admittedly bought into all the claims of how they would make your skin tighter/smell great/softer/acne free/etc. And even had several that I mixed and matched to get the scent and effect I wanted.

I don’t use most conventional products anymore and usually default to bar soap, but when I still want the skin-softening, great-smelling benefits of body wash, I make my own.

Best DIY Body Wash Tutorial 1

The Benefits:

Making your body wash ensures you can use only the finest ingredients most suited for your body’s needs.

A natural body wash comprised of healthy ingredients such as jojoba oil, coconut milk, aloe vera, sweet almond oil, olive oils, and the like will keep your skin healthy, and your body will absolutely love it. Whether it’s for men or women, you’ll be glad you took the time to create your own.

To show you how easy it is to make body wash from scratch using natural ingredients, here are my top three homemade body wash recipes.

DIY Body Wash Recipe No. 1:

Body Wash Ingredients (The Hardware)

3 Tablespoons Liquid Castile Soap

3 Tablespoons Honey (preferably raw)

2 Tablespoons Oils (my preferred combination is one tablespoon of olive oil mixed with one tablespoon of castor oil)

Optional Ingredients

10 Drops Of Your Favorite Essential Oil ( more or less, depending on what suits you)

Body Wash Instructions

Step 1: Thoroughly mix all the ingredients with a spoon in a glass liquid measuring cup.

Note: Do not use a mixer, a whisk, or a blender, as this will create lots of bubbles and make it impossible to get into a container.

Step 2: Pour into your preferred container (like a glass pump dispenser) and use it in the shower as a body wash.

Shelf Life

This recipe will last about a year at room temperature.

Why Do We Use These Ingredients?

Raw Honey: Honey is a wonderful skincare ingredient on its own and can even help in healing wounds due to its antibacterial properties and anti-inflammatory properties (it’s even used in hospitals). This recipe helps soften skin and is naturally soothing & antibacterial, and it will also gently remove dirt and impurities without stripping the skin of natural oils.

Natural Oils: I use natural oils in this recipe to help achieve some of the same benefits as oil cleansing for the entire body.

Liquid Castile Soap: This is what gives our homemade body wash its cleansing ability.

Essential Oils: Gives homemade products (like this homemade body wash or homemade cleaners) a lasting, natural scent. Much better than chemically instilled aromas.

DIY Body Wash Recipe No. 2:

Body Wash Ingredients (The Hardware)

1/3 Cup Honey (preferably raw)

1/3 Cup Melted Coconut Oil

3/4 cup Liquid Castile Soap

Optional Ingredients

20 Drops of Lavender Essential Oil (add more or less, depending on what suits you)

Body Wash Instructions

Step 1: Mix the Honey, the melted coconut oil, and the lavender essential oil. You can also use sweet orange oil if you prefer a more citrusy smell.
Step 2: Next, slowly drizzle in the liquid castile soap.
Step 3: Gently mix everything with a spoon and be careful not to whip too much air into it.
Step 4: Pour the mixture into the container, and it’s ready for your next wash.

Shelf Life

This recipe will last about a year at room temperature.

Why Do We Use These Ingredients?

Coconut Oil: The coconut oil acts as a skin softener and has moisturizing effects that help heal dry skin. Bonus points if you use extra virgin, organic oil.

Raw Honey: Honey is a wonderful skincare ingredient on its own and even has healing properties. In this recipe, it helps soften skin and is naturally soothing & antibacterial. It will also gently remove dirt and impurities without stripping the skin of natural oils.

Let’s mix it up a bit and make some homemade shower gel. The DIY shower gel has a thick gel texture and foamy lather, making your skin feel soft and clean.

It’s made with natural materials and comes together in minutes.

Body Wash Ingredients (The Hardware)

3/4 Cup Distilled Water

1/2 Cup Cocoa Glucose

1 Tablespoon Vegetable Glycerine

1/2 Teaspoon Preservative

50 Drops of Lactic Acid

30 Drops of Citrus Essential Oil (you can add more or less, depending on what suits you)

Optional Ingredients

Colorant

Vitamin E Oil

Body Wash Instructions

Step 1: Pour the distilled water and surfactant into a mixing bowl.
Step 2: Using a spoon, gently stir until the surfactant is completely dissolved in the water. Stir by hand and avoid whipping air into the mixture.

Note: Do not use an electric mixer or blender because agitating the liquids too much will cause foam and bubbles.

Step 3: Add any optional ingredients (i.e., colorant, etc.).
Step 4: Preserve by incorporating the preservative into the gel base.
Step 5: Add in the lactic acid and gently stir until the shower gel thickens (may take 2 to 3 minutes). If the body wash doesn’t thicken properly, continue adding one drop of lactic acid at a time until you achieve your desired viscosity.

Shelf Life

This recipe will last for around four to five months at room temperature.

Why Do We Use These Ingredients?

Vegetable Glycerin: It helps the skin retain moisture, provides softening qualities, and makes the body wash gentler.

Colorant: Use soap colors or food colors to tint your final product. For DIY body wash for eczema or something similar, you might want to use something gentler or opt out of using it altogether.

Lactic Acid: This is what we use as a thickening agent.

Preservative: Used to preserve the homemade body wash or liquid soap.

Essential Oils: Gives homemade products (like this homemade body wash or homemade cleaners) a lasting, natural scent. Much better than chemically instilled aromas.

Coco Glucose: This acts as our surfactant, which, when added to a liquid (in this case, our water), reduces its surface tension, thereby increasing its spreading and wetting properties.

Final Thoughts

In our continued effort towards natural living, we still often forget the essentials.

We tend to read the labels of what we eat, but we neglect other products that ultimately touch our bodies as well, such as bath products. Chemical ingredients are abundant in a bottle of body wash that it’s borderline crazy.

The homemade body wash is not only natural and healthy for most skin types, but it is also affordable and relatively easy to make.
