Step 1: Separate all the parts of the bottle and feeding accessories. These include bottles, nipples, caps, rings, and valves.

Step 2: Before you place these detachable parts in the dishwasher, make sure to rinse. Hold the bottle and other feeding items on running water. You can run them on cold or warm water. 

Step 3: Once you’re done rinsing, place the bottle parts in the top rack of your dishwasher. If there are small parts or items, make sure to place them on a mesh bag or basket preferably close-top so they won’t end up on the dishwasher filter. Dishwashers have temperature settings, so make sure to adjust and run it using hot water. 

Step 4: Dry the bottles and make sure that it runs on a heated drying cycle so it can kill more germs. 

Heat warning: Please check your baby bottles if they’re dishwasher safe. Some baby bottles will deform when touched by hot water or steam inside the dishwasher. 

Step 5: Once you are done, remove them from the dishwasher. Ensure that your hands are clean. Wash your hands with soap and water before removing all the bottle parts.

Step 5: Fill the washing basin with hot water and add soap for cleaning bottles. Do not use strong detergents. Some leave traces on the bottles if they are not thoroughly cleaned and can be ingested by your baby. 

Step 6: Submerge the bottle parts on the washing basin and let it soak for about 5-minutes. Soaking will soften dried milk residue and will be easier to remove when you start brushing it.

Step 7: Scrub the bottle parts with your baby bottle brush. Squeeze water through the nipple holes to make sure they get cleaned.

How to Sterilize by Boiling

So what are the steps you need to take to sterilize by boiling?

Step 1: Separate all the parts of the bottle and feeding accessories. 

Step 2: Place all of the bottle parts in a large pot or saucepan. 

Step 3: Add enough water to cover all the bottle parts. Make sure there are no air bubbles. 

Step 4: Heat water for 5 minutes or until boiling point, then turn it off the stove.

Step 5: Allow the water to cool down in the meantime. Once it’s cold, you can remove the bottle parts or baby items. 

Step 6: Before you remove the bottle parts, ensure that you have washed your hands.

Step 7: Take all the bottle parts from the water and place it in a disinfected surface or clean basin. 

Step 8: Remove the water from the pot or saucepan and shake off the remaining water. 

Step 9: If you are not using the sterilized bottles, you can leave them in the pot or saucepan. Just cover it with the lid and store it in the fridge or clean container.

Note: If you have not used the bottles within 24 hours, you still need to reboil them before using them.

How to Sterilize Using a Microwave or Electric Sterilizer

Similar to boiling and with enough heat, steam can kill bacteria and other pathogens. 

If you are not into boiling and waiting, you can use steamers. Steamers automatically turn off so it’s easier to do than boiling. 

So how do you use a steamer?

There are now different steamers that are available in the market. You can choose those with features that fit your needs. All you need to do is follow the instruction to start.

Warning: Make sure your baby bottles can withstand long exposure to steam. Most baby bottles can (most dishwasher safe bottles can)  but do check your bottle’s specifications.

Step 1: Make sure that when you start, all the bottle parts are thoroughly cleaned. Don’t put dirty bottles in the steamer as this could contaminate it.

Step 2: Put the bottles, nipples and other parts face down. It inside of the parts should be exposed to the steam. 

Step 3: There are instructions for the amount of water that you need to add on the sterilizer and when to turn it on. You just need to follow it. 

Step 4: Sterilizers are covered. You can leave the bottles there until you need to use them. 

Step 5: Make sure to check how long you can leave the bottles in the sterilizer. If it takes more than 24 hours before you can use the bottles, you need to sterilize them again.
