What Causes Rust Stain on Cast Iron?

You might have been shocked to find that your cast iron pan or skillet has rust stains on it.

You have wracked your brains on why this had happened, but don’t know what caused them in the first place. Well, here are a few reasons why the dreaded rust stain occurred.

  • Moisture. Cast iron does not do well in areas where there is high moisture since it causes rust to form.
  • Soaking. Most of us give our pots and pans a good soak after cooking. If you did the same with your cast iron pan, there is a good chance that you will see rust on it.
  • Dishwasher. This is a huge no-no when it comes to cleaning your cast iron cookware
  • Air dry. Air drying can also cause rust stain to start forming on your cast iron pots and pans.
